Today is our daughter’s one hundredth day of school. Apparently, this is a big deal.
[Grumpy old man voice] “Back in my day, we celebrated the first day of school and the last day. But these kids today, with their 100th day of school. Phooey!”
To recognize this milestone in the life of every kindergartener, we had to create a project that involved counting to 100. My idea was to create a caterpillar out of 100 segments. For the segments, we used craft puff balls (pom poms). We threaded a needle and with adult help, our five year old guided the needle through each segment creating a four foot long chain of puffs.
Two googley eyes were glued on the front ball. Every 10 segments we twisted on a pair of pipe-cleaner legs, which let us count by tens as well (doubling the fun!).
It was a big hit. Maybe too big, as there were tears at the realization that the caterpillar had to be relinquished in to the teacher for credit. After many reassurances that it would be returned, a happy little girl skipped off to the 100th day of school this morning, giant caterpillar in tow.
